Week of September 27th Office Update
Posted on 09/27/2021
It’s incredible that September is almost done.  Other than a bit of rain, the weather has really cooperated so far.  While many students continue to wear one set of footwear all day, it is completely understandable that students will wear rain gear, including rubber boots, on rainy fall days.  Families that have not yet done so should also consider sending indoor shoes to school moving forward.  Unless it is raining heavily, we will try to go outside every day for some fresh air and to stretch our legs.  Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Class Re-Organization Update

Over the next week, school staff will continue to prepare for the new school organization that starts on Wednesday, October 6th.  Our goal is to maintain as much continuity as possible.  We will be looking to limit class movements for students and maintain as many contacts with students’ current teachers as possible.  Please expect to hear about any staffing changes and student class placement changes by Friday, October 1st.

For classes where the class lists will change and students are added to a new homeroom group, staff will carefully consider the learning and social needs of each student involved.  As a family, your voice will also be considered.  If you would like to provide input on learning needs and social considerations, please click here to share your thoughts before Monday, September 27th at 9am.

Truth and Reconciliation Week, Orange Shirt Day,  and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - September 30th, 2021

Orange Shirt Day has been observed as a day of learning about the harmful and ongoing impacts of residential schools. Last spring, the federal government enacted legislation recognizing September 30th as a federal statutory holiday commemorating National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This action was in response to Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) Call to Action #80, which asked that the federal government collaborate with Indigenous peoples to establish a statutory holiday to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

We recognize the importance of committing, as a school system, to engaging in learning activities in support of the TRC Calls to Action and commemoration of the ongoing impact of the residential school system.

In Ontario, schools will remain open on September 30th.  Please stay tuned in the coming days for more information on what we are learning and how we will be recognizing this important week and day at Orleans Wood.

Joke/Riddle of the Day is BACK!

Joke/Riddle of the Day is back on the morning announcements starting on Monday, September 27th.  This year, there are two ways to share a possible joke/riddle of the day: Students will be able to pass along jokes/riddles at school in class; or, they can suggest one with help from home by clicking here and completing a quick Google Form.  Based on the overwhelming response levels in the past, not all jokes/riddles are used during the announcements.  We do our best to find ones that match the time of the year and also try to make selections from a variety of classes.

Rowan’s Law Day - September 29th

The last Wednesday of each September has been legislated as a day to raise awareness about concussion safety.  Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a student at John McCrae Secondary School, who died in the spring of 2013.  Rowan's Law Day raises awareness about concussions and concussion safety. To learn more about the OCDSB Concussion Management protocols, please click here.  We will be looking at this important issue throughout the year as a part of our health and physical education programming.

Important Forms - Now Overdue...

Thank you very much to the families who have completed these important forms.  If you have not yet completed them, please do it today!  It takes about five minutes and really helps us at the office!
